But AI-driven features on phones don't behave like a typical file download. Things like real-time voice assistants, live translation, on-device image generation, or cloud-based AI chat tools depend just as much on low latency (the delay before data starts moving) and consistency as they do on raw throughput. A network that delivers blistering peak speeds but stutters under load, or has inconsistent response times, could leave AI features feeling laggy even if a speed test looks impressive.
This is really the core judgement in Ookla's report. It's less about which operator wins on a leaderboard and more about acknowledging that the metrics the industry has relied on for over a decade may no longer capture what actually matters for a growing category of use cases. That's a fair and arguably overdue point. Mobile networks were largely built and marketed around streaming and downloads, not the two-way, low-latency demands of AI processing.
Where the shortfall actually lies
It's worth being clear about what this research does and doesn't prove. Ookla's data suggests some operators known for fast headline speeds don't necessarily lead when it comes to the kind of responsiveness AI workloads need, but that doesn't mean 5G as a technology is fundamentally unfit for purpose. Most of today's AI features still lean heavily on cloud processing rather than the handset itself, so a lot of what's being measured is really about how well an operator's core network and backhaul handle short, latency-sensitive requests rather than sustained big downloads.
The bigger shortfall may sit with the industry's benchmarking habits rather than the networks themselves. If operators have spent years optimising for peak download speed because that's what gets measured and marketed, it's not surprising that some networks are less tuned for the quick, bursty traffic patterns AI tools generate. That's a solvable problem through network engineering and prioritisation, not necessarily a sign that 5G needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
What this means for UK mobile users right now
For most people, this research won't change much day to day. On-device AI features are still relatively limited on most handsets, and cloud AI tools are generally forgiving enough that a slightly higher latency doesn't ruin the experience. But it's a useful signal for anyone buying a new 5G-ready phone with AI features front and centre in the marketing, since real-world performance may depend as much on which operator's network handles that traffic well as on the phone's own hardware.

Still, the direction of travel is sensible. As AI features become a genuine selling point on new phones, expect network benchmarking to slowly catch up, and expect UK operators to start talking about latency and responsiveness alongside their usual speed claims. Until then, the practical advice for anyone choosing a plan is to look beyond the headline speed figure and check real-world reviews of how a network performs for everyday tasks, not just downloads.
