VodafoneThree Make Case for Cutting Red Tape to Keep UK Networks Competitive

VodafoneThree Want Red Tape Reduction To Improve Networks

VodafoneThree wants a red tape reduction, suggesting the networks will massively improve if the regulators rethink the issues MNOs suffer in the UK.

VodafoneThree's Mobile Market Index And The Case for Cutting Red Tape to Keep UK Networks Competitive

VodafoneThree has published its Mobile Market Index, benchmarking the UK against nine other major mobile markets, and its message is upbeat about where targeted reform could take UK connectivity next.

Where the UK stands:

  • 8th out of 10 countries for operating environment competitiveness, behind Singapore, South Korea, the US and Germany, but ahead of France and Spain

  • 7th of 10 on telecoms workforce skills pipeline

  • UK operators face some of the highest energy costs of any peer market, adding real pressure to network running costs

What's holding back further progress, according to the report:

  • Planning red tape that slows down 5G mast and infrastructure rollout

  • Energy costs, with UK mobile operators not getting the same critical infrastructure support other sectors receive

  • Restrictive 5G network slicing rules, with the UK flagged as an outlier compared to international peers

VodafoneThree's networks director, Andrea Dona, framed the findings constructively: "Fast, reliable and quality mobile networks are a fundamental driver of economic growth and prosperity." His call is for three practical reforms: modernising the planning system, giving mobile operators the same energy support as other critical infrastructure providers, and loosening the rules around 5G network slicing.

The takeaway: the report reads as an optimistic one. It's not arguing UK mobile is falling behind so much as making the case that a handful of specific, achievable regulatory updates could unlock the next wave of investment and move the UK up the international rankings.

Worth noting this is VodafoneThree's own commissioned research and reflects the operator's regulatory priorities, though its findings echo similar calls made across the telecoms sector in recent years.

If you are in the industry, does this report ring true? are VodafoneThree's findings accurate ? We would love to hear your thoughts.
