Distributed Antenna Systems can provide the connectivity fixes for railways and other areas problems areas where traditional infrastructure struggles.

Distributed Antenna System Solves Rail Connectivity Issues

Cellnex UK and O2 have teamed up to provide fast 5G connectivity across the Brighton Main Line, a major rail route connecting London, Gatwick Airport and the south coast. The line handles roughly 300,000 passenger journeys every day, making it one of the busiest rail services in the UK.

This rollout is part of a broader push to improve digital infrastructure across transport networks by extending dependable mobile coverage in locations where standard outdoor networks aren’t enough on their own.

Distributed Antenna System at the Heart of the Deployment

A key part of the project is the installation of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS). Instead of using just one powerful antenna, a DAS relies on a network of smaller antennas linked by fibre infrastructure, which helps spread mobile signals across challenging environments.

Along the Brighton Main Line, the technology will expand 5G coverage across stations, tunnels and other parts of the railway, where keeping a reliable connection depends on having dedicated infrastructure in place. It delivers signals nearer to passengers, helping to improve overall network performance along the entire route.

Shared Infrastructure Supports Efficient Network Expansion

The project is being delivered through Cellnex UK’s neutral host model, which enables infrastructure to be shared rather than requiring separate equipment for each operator. This helps optimise deployments and makes better use of existing assets.

Shared infrastructure also gives greater flexibility for future network upgrades and can accommodate additional operators over time, minimising the need for duplicate installations and making long-term network expansion easier.

Delivering Benefits Beyond Faster Speeds

While the rollout delivers faster mobile speeds, it also boosts network capacity and improves service consistency along a busy transport corridor. This makes it easier for passengers to experience uninterrupted calls, streaming services, and other data-heavy applications more reliably throughout their trips.

For businesses, better mobile performance helps support hybrid working by keeping employees connected while they’re on the move. The upgraded infrastructure also adds resilience as mobile data usage continues to grow across public transport networks.

Supporting the Future of Connected Transport

The Brighton Main Line deployment shows how telecommunications companies are working more closely with infrastructure specialists to modernise connectivity along key transport routes. By bringing together 5G technology, Distributed Antenna Systems and shared infrastructure, the project highlights a scalable way to extend mobile coverage in challenging rail environments.

As the need for smooth, reliable digital connectivity keeps rising, and it's not just the railways that benefit from DAS systems, we are currently installing these systems into corporate offices and new builds to ensure consistent connectivity.
