O2 Distributed Antenna System Live For Silverstone British GP

O2 Distributed Antenna System At Silverstone

Milan · 05 Jul 2026

O2 has deployed a DAS (Distributed Antenna System) , a mobile boosting solution at Silverstone, which will mean coverage and speed boosting for all.

A Permanent Connectivity Upgrade Arrives at Silverstone

In preparation for the British Grand Prix, O2 has activated a newly installed permanent Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at Silverstone, representing a major boost in mobile connectivity at one of the United Kingdom’s most frequented sporting venues. Developed in collaboration with Boldyn Networks, this implementation supersedes the temporary mobile infrastructure that was formerly deployed during major racing events. Instead of augmenting network capacity solely for individual events, the circuit now benefits from a permanent, high-capacity 5G network designed to accommodate visitors throughout the entire year.

What the Distributed Antenna System Delivers

Unlike a traditional mobile network that depends on a small number of major cell towers, a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) uses several low-power antennas linked through a centralised network to spread mobile signals over a wide area. These antennas are placed strategically across a venue to deliver more reliable coverage and boost network capacity, especially in places where thousands of people are using their devices at the same time.

At Silverstone, the system covers the full 570-acre site, including the 3.66-mile Formula 1 circuit, to support stronger and more reliable 5G performance. This method boosts network capacity and helps ease congestion when demand is at its highest.

Built for the Demands of the British Grand Prix

The British Grand Prix draws in excess of 500,000 attendees throughout the race weekend, exerting significant demand on mobile network infrastructure. Fans are relying more than ever on their smartphones for digital ticketing, navigation, live race updates, video sharing, mobile payments and staying in touch with friends and family. By activating the permanent DAS network ahead of the event, O2 is aiming to deliver quicker speeds and more reliable connectivity, even when demand is at its peak.

Replacing Temporary Networks with Long-Term Infrastructure

Large sporting events have long relied on operators to bring in temporary mobile equipment to handle the sudden spike in traffic. While these solutions work in the short term, they must be installed and taken down repeatedly for each major event. Silverstone’s new permanent Distributed Antenna System completely changes this approach by offering year-round infrastructure capable of supporting Formula 1 weekends as well as concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and other motorsport events held at the venue.

Part of O2's Wider Network Investment Strategy

The Silverstone rollout is part of Virgin Media O2’s broader Mobile Transformation Plan, supported by roughly £700 million invested in mobile infrastructure. The programme aims to strengthen coverage, boost capacity and improve network reliability in areas where mobile demand is consistently high, such as transport hubs, entertainment venues and major public locations. The Silverstone deployment shows how investing in permanent infrastructure can enhance the customer experience and help networks be ready for future demand.

Looking Beyond Race Weekend

While the British Grand Prix is the first big test of the new infrastructure, its advantages go much further than Formula 1. Since the Distributed Antenna System remains in place permanently, visitors attending future events at Silverstone can look forward to better mobile performance, without the need for temporary upgrades. As connected experiences continue to expand, permanent, venue-wide mobile networks are becoming an increasingly vital part of the UK’s digital infrastructure.
