Virgin Media O2 Reveals 18 Million Brits Targeted By Scammers

Scammers don’t seem to be slowing down at all, and new figures from Virgin Media O2 show just how widespread this problem has become. In the operator’s latest Scam Index, more than 18 million adults across the UK were targeted by fraudsters over just three months, with fake delivery notifications, shopping scams and account alerts still catching people off guard.

Scam messages have been around for years, but modern attacks are becoming harder to spot. Criminals keep changing their tactics, making it more difficult for consumers to tell the difference between a legitimate message and a fraudulent one.

Everyday Services Are Being Used as Bait

One reason these scams still work so well is that they copy services people use every day. Parcel delivery alerts were at the top of Virgin Media O2’s Scam Index, with fraudsters posing as reputable courier companies and saying a delivery has been missed or that a small payment is required before a parcel can be released.

Online shopping scams came next, closely followed by fake account suspension messages that look like they’re coming from banks, streaming services and other trusted brands. Since these messages often arrive when people are waiting for deliveries or making online purchases, many victims respond immediately without pausing to check whether the request is real.

This increased dependence on digital services has, unintentionally, given scammers even more chances to take advantage of familiar habits.

AI is Changing the Scam Landscape

The report also points to increasing public worries about artificial intelligence. Almost two thirds of those surveyed say AI is helping scams become more sophisticated, and it’s easy to understand why.

Rather than relying on badly written phishing emails full of spelling errors, criminals can now produce convincing messages within seconds. AI is also being used to copy voices and tailor scams more closely to individuals, which makes it harder than ever to spot the warning signs that used to give fraudsters away.

As the technology becomes more widely available, cybersecurity experts expect these attacks to become even more targeted in the years ahead.

The Financial Cost goes Beyond the Initial Loss

Falling prey to a scam can lead to serious, long-term effects.

Virgin Media O2 reported that people who lost money said their average financial loss was more than £1,800.

For many victims, the impact doesn’t stop there. Restoring compromised accounts, replacing bank cards, updating passwords, and coping with the emotional fallout of fraud can take weeks or even months. Businesses can be affected too; when employees are targeted by phishing attacks, they may unintentionally reveal sensitive company information if proper safeguards aren’t in place.

How Virgin Media O2 is Responding

To help cut down on scam activity, Virgin Media O2 says it’s been continuing to boost its network-level protections. The company reports that it has now blocked more than 1.4 billion scam text messages, and that close to 100 million suspected scam calls are identified and flagged every month, giving customers an extra warning before they answer.

Even though network protections are getting better, providers acknowledge that technology alone can’t fully stamp out fraud. Consumer awareness is still a vital part of tackling the issue, especially as scammers keep finding new ways to operate.

Scam Tactics are Evolving Faster Than Ever

The most recent Scam Index is another reminder that online fraud is always evolving. Instead of depending on the usual, clearly fraudulent phishing emails, criminals are increasingly combining AI with trusted brand impersonation and social engineering to make their scams look genuine.

For consumers, this means it’s more important than ever to take a moment to confirm unexpected messages. Whether it’s a delivery update, a problem with online shopping, or an urgent notification about an account, checking directly with the organisation before you click a link can help you avoid an expensive error.

As scammers keep improving their methods, mobile operators, businesses and consumers all have a key part to play in helping make the UK’s digital environment safer.
